The Story Behind Choward’s Iconic Mints

C. Howard Company Inc. was founded by Charles Howard, of New York City, in the early 1930s. In search of a “unique and different flavored candy,” Mr. Howard created a delightful mint confection called Choward’s Violet in a small industrial loft on Broadway.

His first retail experience came from selling Choward’s Violet on street corners in Manhattan, where the product quickly gained a loyal following.

Building on its success, Mr. Howard introduced a purple-colored gum tablet known as Choward’s Scented Gum. In the years that followed, he expanded the candy line to include Choward’s Peppermints, Spearmints, and Lemon Mints.

After Mr. Howard’s passing in 1965, the company continued under the leadership of longtime employee Elizabeth Juhase. In the 1970s, she brought on her nephews, Kenneth Pratz and Arthur Pratz, who led the company until 2017. Today, C. Howard Company Inc. is run by Michael Pratz and Ian Kessler.

The company continues to manufacture Charles Howard's original line of quality products, which are now sold across the United States and around the world.
